    External Confirmation of Adherence to Standards: As Applicable to Academic Programmes as to Business and Industry

    The development of, and adherence to, performance standards is imperative for success in today’s competitive global market. This is as true for academic programmes in higher education as it is for the manufacturing and service sectors. Just like their counterparts in business and industry, it is important that graduate career preparation programmes are subject to an external validation process that can substantiate whether or not they are indeed following applicable standards. In this paper the authors discuss the current status of accreditation for graduate programmes designed to prepare tomorrow’s leaders in the student services profession and argue for the development of a new certification system based on the standards established by the US Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS)

    Stress and Violence in the Workplace and on Campus: A Growing Problem for Business, Industry and Academia

    Levels of stress and violence at work have been increasing globally for the past few decades. Whether the setting is business and industry or a college campus, this disturbing trend affects a growing number of people, including those who do not work directly in these environments. In this paper the authors describe the relationship between stress and violence and offer recommendations as to how managers and administrators can reduce employee and student stress levels and help to prevent hostile behaviour from occurring in private companies, public agencies and institutions of higher education. Proactive strategies for preventing violent incidents are included together with suggestions on how to deal effectively with such incidents when they do arise

    Global Pathways: Cultural Competence Curriculum Module

    The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CEBS) received funds to create a task force to determine the best strategies to ensure that students have an opportunity to understand their discipline in a global context. The CEBS Global Pathways Initiative Committee created a generic module on globalization principles that can be integrated into any course in all program areas. These curriculum materials provide a basic introduction to existing knowledge regarding cultural competence. They are designed to provide instructors with accurate information that can easily be integrated into existing undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including courses in psychology and education. In so doing, it is hoped that these materials will enhance the quantity and quality of globalization and the cultural competence framework content in existing courses, so that students can be better prepared for the intellectual and societal challenges facing an increasingly diverse society

    Student Knowledge of Signs, Risk Factors, and Resources for Depression, Anxiety, Sleep Disorders, and Other Mental Health Problems on Campus

    A mixed methods study sought to assess student knowledge of signs, risk factors, and campus services available for mental health disorders. A survey was completed by 831 students and three focus groups were conducted. Respondents felt more knowledgeable about depression than about anxiety and sleep disorders. Graduate students and seniors had a keener awareness of risk factors for anxiety and sophomores were in the greatest danger of failing to recognize these risks. Males often failed to recognize signs and risk factors for mental health problems. Support groups, courses, and workshops on managing relationships, transition to college, and specific mental health disorders are advocated

    Inflammatory myoglandular polyp of the cecum: case report and review of literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Inflammatory myoglandular polyp (IMGP) is a rare non-neoplastic polyp of the large bowel, commonly with a distal localization (rectosigmoid), obscure in its pathogenesis. Up till now, 60 cases of IMGP have been described in the literature, but none located in the cecum.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a case of a 53-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital for further evaluation of positive fecal occult blood test associated to anemia. A colonoscopy identified a red, sessile, lobulated polyp of the cecum, 4.2 cm in diameter, partially ulcerated. The histological examination of the biopsy revealed the presence of inflammatory granulation tissue with lymphocytic and eosinophil infiltration associated to a fibrous stroma: it was diagnosed as inflammatory fibroid polyp. Considering the polyp's features (absence of a peduncle and size) that could increase the risk of a polypectomy, a surgical resection was performed. Histological examination of the specimen revealed inflammatory granulation tissue in the lamina propria, hyperplastic glands with cystic dilatations, proliferation of smooth muscle and multiple erosions on the polyp surface: this polyp was finally diagnosed as IMGP. There was also another little polyp next to the ileocecal valve, not revealed at the colonoscopy, 0.8 cm in diameter, diagnosed as tubulovillous adenoma with low grade dysplasia.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This is the first case of IMGP of the cecum. It is a benign lesion of unknown pathogenesis and must be considered different from other non-neoplastic polyps of the large bowel such as inflammatory cap polyps (ICP), inflammatory cloacogenic polyps, juvenile polyps (JP), inflammatory fibroid polyps (IFP), polyps secondary to mucosal prolapse syndrome (MPS), polypoid prolapsing mucosal folds of diverticular disease. When symptomatic, IMGP should be removed endoscopically, whereas surgical resection is reserved only in selected patients as in our case.</p
